Edge Function Software

Edge Function Software is the maker of :

the dynamic container library efKernel for solving two dimensional elliptic field equations

and clients such as:

currentFlowAnalyzer for accessing Laplace solutions tuned to the microelectronics industry.

planeStressAnalyzer for accessing a corresponding range of solutions to the Navier equation.

Edge Function Solutions are formed as a superposition of the exact solutions arising in applying the separation of variables technique to regions most naturally associated with each edge and vertex.

The  superposition constants are obtained by matching  the solutions to the prescribed boundary conditions and to ensure continuity across any internal boundary needed to decompose the domain into convex-like sub-regions.

As the antithesis of discretization techniques, the Edge Function Method augments design simulations to deepen "all our simulations say" conclusions.

An advantage of this method is the ease with which singularities, which arise from corners, cracks and re-entrant angles, are incorporated.

Rectlinear reentrant corners with finite normal fluxes due to their prescribed boundary conditions is generally accompanied by infinite tangential fluxes(resp. current densities).

Rounding or indenting can be used to transfer singularities into the slopes rather than values.

solves Laplace equation for the voltages, currents in thin film resistors of interest in the microelectronics industry. Post solution based activities such as computing

        • the resistance

        • the voltage, flow and density contours and

        • laser trim curves

are supported.

About

Edge Function Software Ltd., was founded by Patrick M. Quinlan (1919-2001) in the early 1990’s. In the early 1960’s he developed his major research theme: the Edge Function Method for solving linear boundary value problems.

The task of modernising and extending his confirmatory software system was undertaken by his eldest son Michael in the latter half of the 1990’s.
